Straining Towards the Goal
Officeonehope   -

Have you ever looked back on your life and wondered whether you are where you thought you would be by now? Perhaps there are goals you have accomplished, but there may also be dreams that never materialized. Maybe you look back with gratitude for God’s faithfulness, or perhaps you find yourself thinking about mistakes you wish you could undo.

Wherever you find yourself today, Philippians 3 reminds us that the Christian life is not about living in the past. It is about pressing forward toward the future God has prepared for us in Christ. Let us be reminded that as Christians, our best days are ahead of us. As Paul writes, “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13–14).

What an incredible statement! Paul was a man with a remarkable past. He had religious accomplishments he could have proudly displayed, but he also had failures and sins he could never undo. Yet Paul refused to let either his accomplishments or his failures define his future. His greatest desire was to know Christ more deeply and become more like Him. He understood that following Jesus was not a race he had already finished, but a journey in which he needed to keep moving forward.

The same is true for us. We can become so focused on the past that we lose sight of what God wants to do in us today. Some of us carry regrets, guilt, and shame over things we cannot change. Others may be tempted to rest on past accomplishments, satisfied with what God has already done rather than pursuing what He still wants to do. But Paul calls us to look ahead. Because of God’s grace, our past does not have to determine our future. We can learn from yesterday without living there, trusting that God is still at work in us today.

May we encourage one another to run this race with perseverance, keeping our eyes on Jesus and our hearts fixed on the eternal hope we have in Him.

Keep Moving Forward,

Pastor Patrick
