In our everyday lives we have many things that are competing for our attention and devotion. We live in an age of distraction and many times we get caught in the cultural current. It is not always easy to prioritize and practice the right things. Sometimes we may ask ourselves, “What is my heart devoted to?”
The story of the Rich Young Ruler is as pertinent as ever. Here is a man who not only is wealthy, but has followed God’s commands. He has been good and yet he still feels like he is lacking. Jesus calls him to discipleship and does this by presenting to him the thing that has his heart’s true devotion. At this point the man is faced with a decision. Who will he truly give his allegiance to? It seems that his merit nor his wealth can grant him eternal life. He decides he does not want to become complete (teleios) and goes the other way.
Jesus is not simply asking for good works or resources he wants to transform our heart, our mind, and our devotion. He wants us to become disciples. Jesus has led the way in being perfect and complete. How will we respond to Jesus’s invitation to “follow me?”
