Love That Speaks part 3
Today we come to the end of our short journey through Philemon. In just 25 verses, Paul gives us a powerful picture of what the gospel does in the lives and relationships of God’s people.
In Philemon 1:17–25, Paul brings the story of Onesimus and Philemon to its climax. He asks Philemon to receive Onesimus as he would receive Paul. Then Paul makes an extraordinary statement: “If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account.” Paul is willing to step into the middle of a broken relationship and bear the cost of reconciliation.
Those words point us directly to Jesus. We had a debt we could never pay, but Jesus stepped in and paid it for us. Through Christ, we have been reconciled to God. And because we have received that grace, we are called to extend grace to others. Reconciliation doesn’t mean pretending the hurt never happened or ignoring legitimate boundaries. It means refusing to allow the offense to have the final word.
As we finish Philemon, I want to leave us with a simple question: Is there a relationship in your life where God is calling you to take a step toward reconciliation? Maybe that step is forgiveness. Maybe it’s an apology. Maybe it’s a conversation. Maybe it’s simply releasing an old wound to God. Whatever the step may be, don’t underestimate what God can do when His people choose grace over resentment and reconciliation over division.
Philemon reminds us that the gospel changes more than our relationship with God. It changes how we see people, how we forgive, and how we love.
That is Love That Speaks.
